The Art Guild Presents Creating Expressive Abstracts in Pastel and/or Mixed Media with Debora Stewart

Debora Stewart’s workshops are suitable for the experienced beginner and advanced artist working in pastel and/or acrylic mixed media.
Workshop days are structured to include short lectures with demonstrations, warm up exercises, guided learning and individual critiques. Mornings involve more structured learning with afternoons spent on individual studio time for artists to implement the concepts. The end of day includes a structured group critique session.
Debora creates an open and fun environment where all can feel successful. Attending artists love the nurturing workshop atmosphere and come away with a understanding of how to proceed on their own. The pace of the workshop allows artists to gradually develop their skills and discover new ways to express themselves.
Day 1: Introduction to Abstraction
A power point and lecture on abstraction, loosening up and intuitive exercises. Debora will demonstrate of her technique and process. Later, various ways to create abstract compositions, small color studies and larger works are demonstrated. The day is fast paced, active and structured.
Day 2: Abstract Composition and Underpainting Techniques
The day includes intuitive warm ups, power point and short lecture on Abstract Composition and a demonstration of underpainting techniques for pastel and/or acrylic mixed media. The of use of a ground for pastel and/or acrylic is demonstrated. Artists will create thumbnail sketches of compositions and utilize underpainting in their abstractions. Artists can bring other mixed media into their work including markers, different types of brushes, graphite and other mark making tools. Debora brings items and fluid acrylics for artist experimentation.
Day 3: Abstract Realism
Day three focuses on Abstract Realism. Deborah will show various styles and techniques on abstracting flowers. These drawings are used later in abstract realism. Artists will create larger works combining techniques used so far into an abstracted subject. There will also be a demonstration and Debora will display works in various stages of development: flowers, landscapes, portraits and figures. Artists will have more individual time to develop their own works and receive individual guidance.
